Research Themes

Introduction

The work of the CCRU, and the research that has been commissioned on behalf of the CCRU, can be divided into a number of research themes or issues. The intention in this section is to provide some background information on, and highlight examples of, the range of themes considered by the CCRU since it was first established.

Typology of themes

There have been a number of recent attempts to design a typology or a taxonomy, of the various community relations programmes that are undertaken in Northern Ireland (Fitzduff, 1993; Knox, 1997). CCRU itself set out a number of research themes in its Research Strategy. These sources have been used as a guide to producing the following typology of the work of the CCRU. This is a first draft which will be revised when final details on all the work of the CCRU have been obtained.

Each of the following tables is based on a major research theme. These main themes are: community relations practice; aspects of conflict; culture and identity; equality and equity; monitoring, evaluation, and research; and other themes. Within each of the tables are a number of significant sub-themes that have been the subject of research. Links to examples of these research projects or publications will be provided. It is also the intention to provide short guides to a number of the more important themes and these links will appear in the coming months.

It should be noted however that the classification below is not mutually exclusive. Certain projects have, for example, covered more than one particular theme. Where this is the case the project is listed according to its major theme.
